Judging Requirements
1. A sample with no hairs on the surface: first test and judge the burning speed of the sample in the long direction in the warp direction and the weft direction, and carry out the long direction of the test sample with the fast speed.
2. Samples with no hairs on the surface: The direction of the hair bundle is used as the long direction of the sample. 
Fire source and application room: Busen or tirrill burner (flame height: 1.5inch) 
1) The average length of the sample burning and melting does not exceed 6 inches, the burning time after the fire source is removed is no more than 15 seconds on average, and the sample is dropped. The burning time after the falling of the object is no more than 3 seconds on average.
2) The average length of the sample burning shall not exceed 8 inches. The average time of combustion after the fire source is removed shall not exceed 15 seconds. The burning time of the falling objects on the sample shall not exceed 5 seconds on average.

Performance Requirements
1. A textile with a smooth surface:
1) When the sample flame spread time is not less than 3.5 seconds, it has good fire performance;
2) When the sample flame spreads for less than 3.5 seconds, the textile is flammable and unsuitable for clothing.
2. Textiles with fibrous hairs on the surface:
1) When the sample flame spread time is greater than 7 seconds, or the surface burns for 0-7 seconds, it indicates that the fire is not enough to ignite, carbonize, melt the sample, that is, the sample has good fire performance and normal combustion performance;
2) When the sample flame spread time is 4 to 7 seconds, including 4 seconds and 7 seconds, and the back surface is ignited, carbonized, and melted, the sample is considered to have a combustion performance between (1) and (3). ;
When the sample flame spread time is less than 7 seconds, and the flame is vigorous enough to ignite, carbonize, and melt the back side of the sample, it is considered to have rapid and severe flammability.

United States Government Standard for Flammability of Mattresses 16 CFR Part 1633 ”Standard for the flammability (open flame) of mattresses sets”.
Why Test According To This Standard?
The standard is used to evaluate the fire progression and energy output in a mattress or a mattress set when subjected to an ignition source approximate to burning bed clothes.
16 CFR Part 1633 is a federal standard in USA and all manufactured or imported mattresses and mattress sets must meet this standard.

Short Test Description
1. The mattress or mattress set is located on top of a steel rig and exposed to two T-shaped burners with a total burner heat output of 27 kW. 
2. The side burner is applied for 50 seconds and the top burner is applied for 70 seconds. 
The fire is then allowed to develop freely. 
3. The smoke gases produced during the test are collected by a hood and exhaust system from where samples are taken for gas analysis. Heat release rate is measured continuously. The peak rate of heat release of may not exceed 200 kW and the total heat release in the first 10 minutes of the test of may not exceed 15 MJ.

Information about 16 CFR Part 1632
Fire test of mattresses and mattress pads.
Standard
16 CFR Part 1632 - Standard for the flammability of mattresses and mattress pads (FF 4-72, amended).
Why Test According To This Standard?
The standard provides a test to determine the ignition resistance of a mattress or mattress pads, when exposed to lighted cigarette.
 
The standard also provides optional test methods for ticking and edge tape substitution that can be used to reduce the number of additional prototype tests.
 
The standard 16 CFR Part 1632 is a federal standard in the USA and all mattresses and mattress pads manufactured or imported are subjected to those requirements.
 
This test method only evaluates the ignitability of mattresses. To evaluate the burning behaviour, the mattress needs to be tested in full scale with larger ignition sources.
 
Example of materials that can be tested according to this standard
Mattresses, upholstered bed bases, mattress pads, divans, top mattresses etc.
Sample Dimension
Six complete prototype mattress or mattress pad surfaces shall be tested (minimum of three mattresses).
 
Retroactive to May 1, 2006, the “CPSC’s Interim Enforcement Policy”  reduces the number of mattresses to be tested according to 16 CFR Part 1632 to two tests. However, this is only possible if the same product is tested and good results is obtained according to the new open-flame mattress standard under 16 CFR Part 1633.

Short Test Description
1. A total of six complete mattresses ready for sale shall be tested. The top surface (sleeping surface) of the mattress is tested. Cigarettes are located on the smooth surface, seams, tufted locations, quilted locations, tape edges etc. of the mattress. A minimum of 18 cigarettes shall be used during each test.
2. The mattress is divided into two equal sections. One section is covered with a 100 % cotton bed sheet. The other section remains uncovered. A minimum of 9 lighted cigarettes are placed on the uncovered top section and a minimum of 9 lighted cigarettes are placed on the covered section.
3. A second piece of cotton sheeting is then placed over the later group of cigarettes. The test is completed when all cigarettes have burned their complete length. The char damage length shall not be more than 2 inches (5.1 cm) in any direction from the nearest point of any individual cigarettes. This procedure is repeated 6 times.
